For example, in the first column, we see words like “router,” “pixels,” and “firewall,” whose answers to question 1 are all very close to 1. It’s clear that the algorithm has learned to ask a question along the lines of “Does the word tend to appear in sentences with computer words?”* (Remember that under our revised rules, 1 means “completely yes” and 0 means “completely no.”) Similarly, in the third column, we see words like “roasted,” “smoked,” “beef,” and “grilled,” all with answers near 1. The algorithm must have learned to ask a question about cooking with fire. It’s also learned to ask questions about universities and criminal law—and, in other columns not shown, questions about animals, politics, sports, health, and hundreds of other topics.
